The Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) is raising public awareness on the need for a healthy diet and exercises to prevent diseases, especially cancer, at the ongoing Qatar International Food Festival 2017 (QIFF 2017) at the Hotel Park.
QCS Health Education supervisor Dr Hadi Abu Rasheed stressed on the importance of participating in such activities to promote a healthy lifestyle through exercise and healthy food to prevent diseases.
“You can reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer by adopting a healthy lifestyle: maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active at least 30 minutes per day, eating a healthy diet, not smoking, and not drinking alcohol.” he said.
“Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in both men and women worldwide,” Dr Rasheed said. “About 72% of cases arise in the colon and about 28% in the rectum. The lifetime risk of being diagnosed with cancer of the colon or rectum is about 5% for both men and women.”
He noted that colorectal cancer can be detected early through a high-sensitivity stool test, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
