Judges of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards have picked Firos Syed's ‘Rounded Life’ as the winner of the Qatar National Award.
The runners-up of the award are Emmad Mohamed Ahmed Elhag (second) and Abdulhadi Saleh Almarri (third).
The Sony World Photography Awards “is the world’s largest photography competition” and the National Awards is a global programme open to photographers of all abilities, according to a press statement.
It aims to find the ‘best single photograph’ taken by a local photographer in 65 countries.
‘Rounded Life’, the winning piece from Syed, an Indian national based in Doha, was placed in the Culture category. The photograph depicts the daily life of a potter.
Winners and runners-up across all 65 National Awards were announced on Sunday. The winning work will be shown alongside the awards’ other winning and shortlisted images at the Sony World Photography Awards & Martin Parr – 2017 Exhibition in London from April 21 to May 7, and published in the annual winners’ book.
2017 is the 10th anniversary of the Sony World Photography Awards, produced by the World Photography Organisation.
The awards recognise and reward the best contemporary photography captured over the last year, and incorporate four competitions -- Professional, Open, Youth and Student Focus. The overall winners of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards will be announced on April 20.
