The Nepali Women Society-Qatar (NWS) organised a programme marking the 107th International Women’s Day at a local restaurant recently.
The programme was attended by over 100 non-resident women and chaired by NWS president Susmita Bhusal Bhattarai. Maya KC, a Nepali businesswoman and chief adviser of Basanta Film Private Limited, was the chief guest. NWS has been celebrating International Women’s Day since 2013.
Speaking during the programme, community leader Renuka Karki said that Qatar is a safe destination for Nepali women to work. She urged the Nepali government to amend the existing law to make it easier for women to come to Qatar to work. “Qatar can be an option where our women can work safely, earn and be independent,” Karki said.
Another speaker, Mina Tamang said that Nepali society has gradually changed for the good in terms of gender equality. She said Nepali families are now educating their daughters as they were doing their sons. “Education is a tool with which our daughters can become independent,” Tamang stressed.
Guest and folk singer Debika KC talked about the recent changes happening in Nepal when it comes to gender equality.
Amina Khan, another community leader, talked about the measures to reduce violence against women.
Maya KC, the chief guest, said that the independence of a Nepali woman is increasing day-by-day, which makes her proud.
Susmita Bhusal Bhattarai underscored this year’s Women’s Day’s theme, “Be Bold for Change,” and talked about Nepali women who were bold and succeeded in changing their lives and communities. She said, “Women should celebrate Women’s Day by remembering their successes and by planning for future.”
