The State of Qatar and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Qatar’s contribution in the functioning of the Unesco Regional Office in Doha, and on the financial support provided by Qatar to the Unesco recently.
HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Mohamed Abdul Wahed Ali al-Hammadi, President of the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, signed the MoU on behalf of the government of the State of Qatar, while Unesco Director-General Irina Bokova signed for the organisation.
 The signing took place during a meeting yesterday between HE the Minister and the Director-General of Unesco, who is currently visiting the country. During the meeting, they discussed several topics, including a visit to archaeological and heritage sites in Qatar such as Al Zubarah, which was added to the Unesco World Heritage List.
They also discussed ways of enhancing the relations between Qatar and Unesco in the fields of education, culture, science and communication, and the efforts made by the  Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science and other institutions and ministries to implement joint programmes and activities with Unesco particularly with regard to the Education for All programmes, and programmes supporting education and sustainable development post-2015, among others.
The meeting touched on the importance of Unesco’s support to activities and programmes of Qatari network of schools associated with Unesco, especially as these schools are implementing programmes and activities in line with the goals and objectives of the organisation. The Director-General of Unesco extended her thanks and appreciation to the State of Qatar and HE the Minister on the continued support for Unesco and its Regional Office in Doha, which contributed positively to achieving the organisation’s goals.
It may be recalled that Qatar had nominated HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, adviser at the Emiri Diwan, for the post of Director-General of the Unesco, and the elections will be held during the next session of the General Conference of Unesco.
