Qatar University College of Law (QU-LAWC) will be hosting an international conference on ‘Law and Sport: Contemporary Perspectives’ on February 19 and 20 in association with the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC).
It aims to raise the community awareness on the importance of legal regulations in sport activities at the local and regional levels, and highlight the economic benefits of investing in sport activities while identifying the legal and operational challenges in this area.
The event will bring together legal and sport experts and policymakers to discuss and share their ideas and experience on the most recent development and practices of sport regulations at the local, regional and international levels, and to provide efficient solutions for the various legal, economic and technical gaps and challenges that face the investment in sport, which will contribute to advancing the sport sector in Qatar in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.
The itinerary includes sessions themed ‘The International Regulation of Sports’, ‘Sport and Civil Law’, ‘Sport and sanction’, ‘Governance of Sport’, ‘Arbitration in Sport Dispute’, and ‘Investment and Intellectual
Property in Sport Law’.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, LAWC dean Dr Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi noted that the regulation of sport activities has been a subject of high importance for various legal systems in Qatar as the country prepares itself for hosting FIFA World Cup 2022. He stressed the importance of the correlation between sport and the various political, social and economic sectors.
Dr al-Khulaifi also noted that the conference attracted 70 submissions, among which 24 papers were selected. “The conference’s papers and recommendations will be collected in a booklet to be used as a legal reference.”
QOC Sport Affair Department director and president of Qatar Swimming Association Khaleel Ibrahim al-Jabir said the collaboration with QU will serve to enrich students’ expertise and knowledge in the field of sports.
“At QOC, we are committed to advancing collaboration with academic and legal institutions in the area of sports. In this context, the Committee has established the first Executive Master in Law and Sports.”
LAWC associate deans for Academic Affairs Dr Yaser al-Khalaileh, for Research Dr Faouzi Belknani and for Outreach and Engagement Dr Yassin El-Shazly, and QOC Legal Affairs manager Fahed al-Muraikhy were also present at the press conference.
