Katara – the Cultural Village will host more than 80 athletic activities to mark the Qatar National Sport Day (NSD) on February 14.
The NSD celebration at Katara, themed “Show the Game Skills,” aims to promote a healthy and active lifestyle among Qatar residents.
“We were keen to engage various institutions and sport federations from the State of Qatar. The number of participants exceeded 70 associations, federations, and institutes, offering more than 80 athletic activities,” said Katara deputy general manager Ahmad al-Sayed, also the NSD organising committee head.
Many of the activities for individuals and groups will cover different sport disciplines such as water sports, outdoor activities, sand and court sports, basketball, football, tennis, chess, handball, cycling, and beach handball competitions. Some participating institutes will put up kiosks to give free health tips and medical checkups for visitors.
The senior Katara official explained there will be a horse parade and visitors could experience horse-riding at the venue. The programme will also include a “jogging competition” for both men and women aged 50 and above. Katara will have designated areas for women and children to exercise and play.
Katara will distribute wrist-bands for children from the information centre. Some fitness centres will offer physical and fitness examinations to the public while NSD organisers will also distribute prizes and gifts.
Besides the various activities scheduled, the Kuwaiti champion, Tariq al-Qallaf, will deliver a lecture explaining aspects regarding the fencing sport.
Katara is keen on developing an advanced, scientific and health approach that combines sports with miscellaneous activities aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030, which considers “sport as an essential element of everyone’s life.”
All scheduled NSD activities and events at Katara will be at the esplanade, from 9am to 6pm. The organising committee will distribute a detailed schedule, including the timing of the activities.
