Self-driving vehicles can now be tested on public roads in Singapore after amendments to road traffic laws were passed on Tuesday in parliament.
Second minister for transport Ng Chee Meng said the transport minister can now create new rules which can limit the time and space allowed for the trials, previously used in roads with light traffic.
Once the self-driving vehicles show high competency, they will be allowed to drive in complex environments including public roads, Ng said.
"As this is emerging technology, the provisions will provide the flexibility needed to assess the appropriate regulatory response more quickly," said Ng, who added that a five-year period would be used to assess the situation.
The country had earlier launched trials of driverless taxis and buses in a bid to offer first and last-mile coverage for passengers getting to and from the main nodes of public transport.
