A video of Donald Trump's granddaughter singing in Mandarin has gone viral on Chinese social media at a time when people are also commenting about the US president's failure to send official Lunar New Year greetings.
Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and her daughter, Arabella Kushner, attended a Chinese New Year celebration at the Chinese embassy in Washington on Wednesday.
Ivanka later posted a video of 5-year-old Arabella singing and playing with a traditional Chinese puppet, much to the delight of Chinese social media users.
"Ivanka is not her father. At least she and her daughter have kind intentions," wrote one user of the Sina platform.
Arabella has been studying Chinese and last year a video of her reciting an ancient Chinese poem also went viral.
However, social media users and Chinese state media also noticed that Donald Trump did not offer official New Year's greetings to the Chinese people, as was customary for his predecessors Barack Obama and George W Bush.
The state-owned publication Global Times on Thursday wrote that "Trump's failure to send Lunar New Year greetings prompts worries about Sino-US ties."
"Some Chinese [internet] users felt Trump was being disrespectful by not sending a greeting," the newspaper wrote.
Trump has had a tense relationship with China since taking office in January. The US president has accused China of trying to manipulate its currency and has threatened to impose tariffs on Chinese imports.
