Roads surrounding Tooting Broadway Tube station were placed on lockdown as police investigated a “suspicious package”. Streets including Tooting High Street, Garratt Lane and Garratt Terrace were evacuated just before 8.30pm as a sea of police vehicles descended near the station. A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed officers were investigating a suspect package. Police cordons were lifted just before 9.30pm as roads were reopened. Witnesses told how bars and restaurants were cleared and shops shut amid a heavy police presence at the Tube station. Daniel Hamilton told the Standard: “I live around a hundred metres from the station and had a phone call from a friend to say he couldn’t get down my road because it was blocked off. “From what I could see there was a bus inside the cordon so maybe it was something found on that but thankfully this wasn’t a serious incident. “I was really impressed with the quick response. As a Londoner it gives me reassurance were anything to happen.”
