In partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has provided 264 primary care nurses to 258 schools across the country to ensure a safe and healthy environment during the examination period.
The primary care school nurses deliver support by providing healthcare through assessment, intervention and follow-up for all students, addressing the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students to support their achievements in the learning process.
Afrah Mousa, director, Health Promoting School Programme and Services at PHCC, said: “PHCC considers the role of primary care nurses to be integral to ensuring optimal health outcomes for all people across their lifespan.
"Primary care nursing in schools applies a social model of healthcare that addresses the health needs of students by offering a wide range of service delivery including immediate healthcare needs, promoting healthy mentality and lifestyle choices, encouraging illness prevention through screening and early detection as well as administrating intervention and referral.
“Following the start of exam season, PHCC has collaborated with schools across Qatar to promote a healthy educational environment, where not only is the students’ physical health a priority but a there is also a major focus on psychological state given that this is a stressful period for them.”
PHCC nurses also participate in the assessment of students’ development and growth by carrying out a health check for each student four times throughout the school year, monitoring nutritional habits, encouraging detection of any potential chronic disease by raising students’ awareness of health issues and fostering the development of healthy lifestyle habits.
In co-ordination with the medical department of the School Health Programme and Services and school principals, the school nurses provide emergency services, seclusion of contagious cases, if any, and a seamless provision of comprehensive health services.
