Al Rayyan municipality including Sheehaniya tops the municipalities that have issued the highest number of building permits – 192 in December last year, shows a report by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS).
The municipality accounted for 35% of the total number of building permits issued in the country, figures released by MDPS on Monday showed.
Doha Municipality came in second place with 133 permits (23%), followed by Al Wakrah (88 permits - 15%) and Al Da'ayen (63 - 11%).
The building permits issued by other municipalities are as follows: Umm Slal 59 permits (10%), Al Khor 24 permits (4%), and Al Shamal nine permits (2%).
In terms of the type of permits issued, data indicate that the new building permits (residential and non-residential) accounted for 62% (356 permits) of the total issued in December 2016.
The permits for building extension works constituted 35% (200 permits), and fencing 3% (18 permits).
In the residential category, permits for villas topped the list and accounted for 51% (163 permits) of the total issued in the country last month. As many as 29 permits for apartment units were issued in December and made up 9% of the total issued last month.
In the non-residential category, 19 permits (50%) were issued for commercial buildings followed by industrial buildings such as workshops and factories (eight / 21%), mosques (five – 13%) and government buildings (four – 11%).
However, the MDPS data showed that the number of building permits in Qatar last month was 6% lower than in November 2016.
The decrease noted in various municipalities are; Al Khor (33%), Al Shamal (25%), Al Daayen (24%), Al Wakrah (13%) and Al Rayyan (3%).
On the other hand, there was an increase in Umm Salal (31%), and Doha (2%) municipalities.
According to MDPS, building permits data is of particular importance as it is considered an indicator for the performance of the construction sector in Qatar, which has a significant role in the national economy.
