Al-Bairaq, an innovative high school project presented by Qatar University Centre for Advanced Materials (QU-CAM), won the Middle East Silver Award at the third annual Reimagine Education Awards, held recently at the National Constitution Centre in Philadelphia, US.
Al-Bairaq accomplished this achievement for altering the relationship between learner and teacher, moving from a dynamic that is explicitly hierarchical, to one that makes explicit a shared goal, and places the student into the role of co-creator of knowledge.
The event, organised by The Wharton School - SEI Centre at the University of Philadelphia, and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) - compiler of the QS World University Rankings, attracted 807 submissions from 56 countries.
Out of the 527 accepted entries 140 were shortlisted. The international panel of judges consisted of 40 experts who evaluated the projects based on three main criteria: innovation, impact, depth or scalability.
QU vice president for research and graduate studies Prof Mariam al-Maadeed said the achievement demonstrates the quality of research at the institution.
"In this regard, QU has notched up a number of ISO certifications for its research labs. Al-Bairaq is committed to driving forward the spirit of innovation among high school students by providing them with the scientific expertise from elementary to secondary school.”
CAM director Dr Nasser Abdullah Alnuaimi felt that the achievement demonstrates CAM’s mission to build and manage an academic and research environment as part of its role to develop a knowledge-based economy.
"Through Al-Bairaq, we mentor students in developing the skills, competencies and mindset needed to overcome the challenges that they face in their personal and academic lives.”
CAM manager of outreach and engagement Dr Noora al-Thani described the award as a testament of the continuous success of Al-Bairaq project since its establishment in 2010. "The project had won the 2015 WISE Award for Innovation in Education. We will continue to deliver on our mission to advance the project and its various programmes.”
