Many Germans woke up to their first working day of the new year on Monday with a light covering of snow in parts of the country.

Snowfalls were reported in the nation's biggest state of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as in the eastern states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Brandenburg and the nation's capital, Berlin.

"It can happen that it will snow in the morning," said a spokeswoman for the German Weather Service (DWD). "In the afternoon too, there can be showers but the snow will quickly turn into slush and thaw," he said.

There were no reports of major traffic delays or accidents, with only minor damage to some cars after drivers suddenly found themselves on slippery roads.

The DWD has predicted further snowfalls this week with temperatures across the country climbing during the day to just above zero.

However, the DWD is not expecting a dramatic outbreak of cold wintry conditions in the nation.
