It's year-end cheer for cinemas in Qatar as people throng multiplexes in large numbers.
A combination of holidays for many children and blockbuster releases has led to an increase in ticket sales, especially on weekends, it is learnt.
Last weekend was particularly good for the multiplexes as residents, including a large number of children enjoying their winter school break, went to catch their favourite stars in action.
Cinema operators are confident that this weekend, too, will bring good business.
One of the prime contributors to the surge in footfall is the Indian blockbuster Dangal starring Aamir Khan. The biographical sports drama has drawn big crowds and the spell is expected to continue, according to sources.
A Qatar Cinema and Film Distribution Company official said the screens operated by their company reported good viewership following the film's release last weekend. He added that a number of Bollywood films released in the last two months have fetched good revenues for local cinema operators.
Usually, late-night shows at some of the company's screens have only a handful of viewers but things looked different last weekend.
Similar feedback was also received from the operators of Asian Town Cinema, where big crowds were spotted even for the afternoon shows on Friday.
Visits to a couple of locations showed that several schoolchildren had come to watch the movie, accompanied by their parents.
Similarly, a Malayalam movie screened at some of the screens also recorded good viewership, according to cinema owners, while some Hollywood films, too, were doing well at the local box office.
