Qatar University College of LAWC (QU-LAWC) recently celebrated the International Anti-Corruption Day in co-operation with Al-Sulaiti Law Firm and Legal Consultancy.
Attendees included QU president Dr Hassan al-Derham, head of Qatar Financial Information Unit Sheikh Ahmed bin Eid al-Thani, LAWC dean Dr Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi, and Al-Sulaiti Law Firm and Legal Consultancy’s Mubarak al-Sulaiti, as well as officials from Qatari Public Prosecution and government and judicial sectors, LAWC faculty and students.
The event featured a moot court on “corruption case” performed by five students from LAWC Science of Crimes and Penalties Programme: Majed Yaacoub al-Yusuf, Hassan Saleh Hassan, Abdelrahman Zeidan al-Hilal, Khalifa Mohamed Ashir, and Ali Nasser Jarallah.
The event also included a film screening on crime scene by LAWC students, a review of Qatari model in anti-corruption, and a lecture on “Issues of Anti-Corruption in the Arab World” delivered by LAWC assistant professor in Criminal Law Dr Iyad Haroon, and in which he highlighted security challenges and legal issues and the role of politics in anti-corruption.
Dr al-Derham said the prevention of all aspects of corruption is a key factor to achieve a country’s development and prosperity. “Hence, Qatar sought since an early phase of its foundation many ways to prevent corruption.The university continues in its efforts to graduate the future generation of leaders who are well-equipped with human principles and values to prevent all aspects of corruption.”
Dr Mohamed al-Khulaifi said LAWC plays a pivotal role in raising community awareness and in providing efficient solutions to issues that impact Qatari society. “In this context, the College is committed to establishing a legal culture to prevent all aspects of corruption, and show its negative impact on nations and societies. To achieve this goal, the College has proposed a course on anti-corruption within its curriculum.”
