HH Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Personal Representative of HH the Emir, attended yesterday the award ceremony of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding, which took place at the St Regis Doha. A number of their excellencies, ministers and ambassadors, along with prominent intellectuals, attended the ceremony. Chair of the Award’s Board of Trustees Dr Hassan al-Naama stressed on the award’s role in establishing a sense of understanding between civilisations. He expressed his thanks to HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani for introducing the award. Thereafter, HE the Minister of Culture and Sports Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser al-Ali honoured the three winners from each award category. For translation from Arabic into a language other than English, Salvador Pena Martin won for his translation of 1001 Nights. For translation into Arabic from a language other than English, Saleh Almani won for his translation of Diez Mujeres (Ten Women). For translation from Arabic into English, Michael Cooperson won for his work on Virtues of the Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal.
