HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, adviser at the Emiri Diwan and Qatar’s candidate for the director general post at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), met in Oslo with Norwegian State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laila Bokhari, on the sidelines of his current visit at the invitation of Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) as part of the Oslo Urban Peace Week.
Bokhari praised the depth of ties between Norway and Qatar and their efforts to establish global peace and co-operate in the fields related to Unesco’s interests, particularly in education and heritage, hailing the role of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development and its projects in service of education.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the vision of Qatar’s candidate in managing Unesco with Bokhari stressing the backing of Scandinavian countries for Qatar’s candidate. She noted that Sweden, a member of Unesco’s executive board, supports al-Kuwari’s candidacy.
HE Dr al-Kuwari also met State Secretary to the Minister of Education and Research, Bjorn Haugstad. The meeting focussed on the Qatari candidate’s vision for the future of Unesco, particularly the challenges facing the organisation. They also touched on co-operation between the two countries in the field of education.
The Norwegian official hailed what Qatar is offering in terms of support for education and expressed wishes that the Qatari candidate will succeed as she voiced readiness to work with him in the future for the benefit of Unesco.
