Late chief minister J Jayalalithaa has left behind property and assets worth over Rs114 crores and since she has left no will speculation is rife about who will inherit them.
The Hindu daily reported that her house Veda Nilayam, in the upmarket Poes Garden area of Chennai, tops the list. Spread over 24,000 sq ft and valued at Rs.43.96 crores today, it was bought by Jayalalithaa and her mother, actress Sandhya, in 1967 for Rs1.32 lakh.
She also owned 14.50 acres at Jeedimetal village in Telegana, 3.43 acres in Cheyyur village in Tamil Nadu and four commercial properties in Chennai. As these purchases were made jointly with her mother, lawyers said they form part of ancestral wealth.
At the time of death, Jayalalithaa had cash of Rs41,000 and Rs10.63 crores in fixed deposits in banks and finance companies. She was also a partner in five business firms - Sri Jaya Publications, Sasi Enterprises, Kodanad Estate, Royal Valley Floritech Exports and Green T Estate. She also owned a fleet of cars valued at Rs42.25 lakhs.
Earlier she had declared possessing 1,250kg of silver and 21.8kg of gold. However, their value could not be ascertained as they were with the Karnataka government treasury as part of her corruption trial procedures.
Lawyers who preferred anonymity told the Hindu, “As per law, the rule of succession in the absence of a will is sons, daughters and husband; next husband’s heirs and then mother and father and their heirs.”
They added that since she had not named any executor, the court may intervene to appoint one to divide her assets.
Meanwhile, Jayalalithaa’s party is also facing a power tussle as her niece Deepa, is opposing the appointment of Sasikala to the powerful post of party general secretary. Sasikala was Jayalalithaa’s confidante for 32 years, while Deepa is her deceased elder brother Jayakumar’s daughter.
The state government will build a memorial at Jayalalithaa’s grave soon. She was buried next to her mentor and former chief minister M G Ramachandran at the MGR memorial on Marina Beach on December 6.
The Public Works Department (PWD) is overseeing the construction.
Meanwhile Tamil Nadu Congress leader Thirunavukkuarasar has urged the state government to convert Poes Garden also into a memorial.
