Thundershowers are expected in Qatar on Friday along with sudden strong winds, the Met department has said, forecasting a wet weekend for the country.

Doha is among the places where it is expected to rain on Friday, according to the weather report, which has also issued a warning for strong winds, high seas and thundery rain in offshore areas.

In a statement, the Met department said the influence of the ongoing spell of “atmospheric instability” was expected to increase on Friday and Saturday, with moderate to heavy rain expected to extend over most areas in the country. It is likely to be thundery at times and will also be accompanied by hail and strong winds.

The impact of the instability is expected to reduce gradually from Sunday though there is still a possibility of scattered light to moderate rain until Tuesday, which may become thundery at times, the weather office has said. It has also noted that the conditions are forecast to become stable by next Wednesday.

The Met Department has once again urged people to be cautious and avoid sea activities during this period in view of the expected conditions.

Doha received the first rain of the season on Wednesday and light showers were reported from some places on Thursday as well. According to information published on the social media accounts of the Met department, 12.3mm of rain was recorded in the Al Khor road weather station on Wednesday, 2.7mm in the Doha airport area and 1.8mm in the Al Khor airport area.

Meanwhile, the detailed forecast for Friday says the wind speed may go up to 28 knots in inshore areas and 35 knots in offshore areas during thundershowers. Cloudy conditions are likely in both areas along with scattered rain, which may become thundery at times, while the sea level may rise to 13ft in some places.

A minimum temperature of 18C is expected in Abu Samra on Friday, followed by 19C in Al Khor, while in Doha it will be relatively higher at 23C. The maximum, on the other hand, will be 28C in Doha, Wakrah and some other places, according to the Met department.
