Oryx GTL has achieved a zero Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) for the fifth consecutive year, an industry Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standard, reflecting the company’s ‘zero tolerance, no compromise’ safety culture.

The milestone, which was achieved in August 2016, serves as an “unparalleled” safety benchmark for any oil and gas company worldwide, and reconfirms that “safety is a way of life” culture entrenched throughout Oryx GTL, the company said.

Seen as the “most important” Key Performance Indicator (KPI) used by Oryx GTL to evaluate HSE risks and occupational health and safety performance, zero TRIR is the result of close collaboration between and the diligence of all employees, contractors, and stakeholders in establishing world-class safety best practices.

Supported by strategic campaigns such as ‘Road to Zero Harm’ initiated in 2009 and ‘Beyond Zero Harm’ initiated in 2012, Oryx GTL said it has spearheaded a transformation in HSE standards that has “positively impacted” not only health and well-being of all individuals working at company sites, but also the company’s business model.

Today ‘Beyond Zero Harm’, which embraces tools such as ‘Behaviour-Based Safety Approach’ and ‘Oasis’ (Observations At Site Improves Safety) procedures, continues to revolutionise Oryx GTL’s corporate safety and security culture, the company said.

Abdulaziz al-Muftah, Oryx GTL chairman and director of Industrial Cities at Qatar Petroleum, congratulated Oryx GTL for an “outstanding, world-class achievement” of completing five consecutive years of zero TRIR.

“Oryx GTL’s admirable and exemplary safety is a result of dedicated efforts, operational excellence, and a commitment to safety and the well-being of our people all combined to form a solid and sustainable safety culture.”

He added: “It is prudent to stay ahead in our health, safety, and environmental protection efforts, and to continue to set world-class safety benchmarks to safeguard the well-being of our people, and the communities within which we work and operate.”

Mohamed al-Enazi, chief administration officer at Oryx GTL said: “The whole company can be immensely proud of the achievement of five consecutive years of zero TRIR, which is a testimony to the success of our company-wide safety campaigns and tools, training, and the unwavering support of the executive management from the CEO to department heads and key safety personnel.

“The objective will be to reach zero TRIR for the sixth year running, which will leave absolutely no room for complacency. But I am confident that, with a track record of close collaboration and tenacity, our employees, contractors, and stakeholders can reach another world-class landmark on what is a continuous journey of HSE excellence.”

Phinda Vilakazi, vice-president GTL Country Management at Sasol, Oryx GTL’s South African joint venture partner, said: “Sasol is proud of Oryx GTL’s admirable success in the safety domain."

“Achieving and maintaining such a prestigious record not only reflects Oryx GTL’s commitment and efforts to improve its sustainability operations, but also shows that it is proactively thinking of its employees’ well-being and the community at large. We are confident that Oryx GTL will continue to build on the success it has achieved for several years to come.”

In addition to ensuring the health and wellbeing of staff, contractors, and visitors, zero TRIR is strategically important to the company by demonstrating its support for sustainable development in Qatar, one of the pillars of National Vision 2030, Oryx GTL said.

In this regard, Oryx GTL said the company remains “fully-committed” to continually improving the sustainability of its operations by implementing and maintaining world-leading HSE practices.
