El Salvador's former president Elias Antonio Saca and six other former officials were arrested early Sunday, the attorney general's office said.
They were detained "on charges of various crimes," it said, providing no specifics in the announcement on Twitter.
Saca, a member of the conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), was president of El Salvador from 2004 to 2009.
