Roundtable discusses JASTA law

The approval of Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) law by the US Congress has come at a time when the region undergoes geopolitical tensions and challenges, an academic said yesterday.
Dr Abdullah Baabood, director, Gulf Studies Centre (GSC) at QU College of Arts and Sciences (QU-CAS), was speaking at a roundtable on JASTA law, hosted by QU College of Law (QU-LAWC).
The event aimed to raise community awareness on the basic principles of international law, and to identify the various frameworks of international relations at the regional and international level.
It brought together academics, practitioners, researchers and students to discuss the adequacy of the provision of JASTA law with the rules and principles of
international law.
The programme featured an introductory session on ‘Highlights on the JASTA Law’ provided by LAWC teaching assistant and externship programme co-ordinator Fatma Almesleh.
It also included discussion sessions moderated by LAWC associate dean of academic affairs and professor of International Law Dr Yasser Alkhakailah, and presented by LAWC professor of public international law Dr Ibraheem al-Anani and QU Social and Economic Survey Research Institute director and LAWC associate professor of constitutional law Dr Hassan al-Sayed.
They discussed issues related to ‘Bending legal force of JASTA law in International law perspective’ and ‘JASTA Law from Constitutional law perspective’.
Other discussed topics included ‘Sovereign immunity theory and its importance in international law’, ‘Legal binding effect of JASTA law in light of international law provisions’, ‘Waiver of sovereign immunity and its consequences’, ‘JASTA law and constitutional procedures’, ‘JASTA law and its conformity with international obligations’, and ‘The impact of JASTA law on alliances in the region (political view)’.
Dr Baabood added that the event aligns with GSC’s mission to address issues that are related to changes on the regional and international level, and which have an impact on the Gulf countries.
