The Doha Criminal Court has sentenced a Bangladeshi man to five years in jail and fined him QR200,000 after he was convicted of possessing illicit drugs for trade purposes. The court also ordered his subsequent deportation, according to local Arabic daily Arrayah.
The Drugs Prevention Department at the Ministry of Interior had received information from sources that the man used to sell marijuana in the Doha Industrial Area.
An investigation was subsequently conducted into the matter, which confirmed the reports.
The police then raided the defendant’s accommodation in the Industrial Area after obtaining the necessary legal approvals from the Public Prosecution.
A search of the place revealed 16 wrapped packages of marijuana, which appeared ready for circulation, hidden under the bed.
Over 2.5kg of the contraband was found in his possession. The officer-in-charge testified before court that the drugs were found with the defendant at the time of the raid.
