The State of Qatar called yesterday for enhancing of the rights of the elderly.
This appeal was made by the Second Secretary at Qatar’s Permanent delegation to the UN Office in Geneva, Nour Ibrahim al-Sada, during a dialogue with the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons (HROP).
Al-Sada praised the efforts of Rosa Kornfeld-Matte, the UN Independent Expert, in promoting the rights of elderly people and her report on the matter. Al-Sada said that it’s important that elderly citizens enjoy their full human rights, especially in the absence of any specific documents on the rights of the elderly.
She noted that Qatari laws guaranteed the elderly social security, housing, as well as legal protection. She added that the country had established institutions for that cause, such as the Centre of Empowerment and Care Elderly (Ihsan).
The centre works on providing healthcare services, in addition to mental and social ones to elderly citizens of Qatar. Ihsan also works with a number of government institutions and NGOs on enhancing the contribution of the elderly to society.
