An Austrian court on Wednesday sentenced a Syrian man to life in jail for murdering his wife in his homeland in 2011, after Vienna refused to extradite him because of the country's civil war.
The court in Wiener Neustadt, south of Vienna, found the 49-year-old guilty of shooting his wife three times at point-blank range at their home in the Aleppo region of Syria after she asked for a divorce.
The man also tried to kill their 10-year-old son, but his gun jammed.
He was arrested in Austria on an international arrest warrant issued by Damascus, but Vienna opposed his extradition because of the war raging in Syria.
The Syrian maintains his innocence and has said he plans to launch an appeal.
