The Italian SuperCup final between league winners Juventus and Coppa Italia finalists AC Milan will be held in Doha on December 23, Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Italian Serie A announced yesterday.
It will be the second time Doha is selected to host the match, after Napoli beat Juventus in 2014 on penalties at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.
“The strong relationship between the Italian and Qatari football governing bodies and the highly successful organisation in Doha of the 2014 Supercoppa TIM between Juventus and Napoli have been key factors for the return of the event to Qatar,” QFA said in a statement on its website.
“AC Milan and Juventus, two of the world’s most storied clubs, were in favour of Doha as the host city ahead several proposals received from around the world. Both clubs have been impressed by previous matches in which they have participated in Qatar and were keen in returning for yet another official competition,” it added.
Serie A TIM president Maurizio Beretta said Qatar has been a “great partner” and “demonstrated the know-how, passion and hospitality to organise our event at the highest level”.
He said: “We’re proud that (2022 World Cup hosts) Qatar has shown such an interest in hosting the SuperCup. Qatar has shown it has the capacity, passion and hospitality to host one of the top games in Italian football in the best way possible.”
QFA president HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani highlighted the strong ties with Italian football and Doha’s commitment to host world class events.
“We are eager to see Juventus and AC Milan, two global powerhouses return to Doha and compete for the Supercoppa TIM in front of thousands of fans from around the world.”
