The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has launched a discussion forum on its website on the amnesty scheme for illegal residents.
A three-month grace period was announced last month and came into effect on September 1. It will continue until December 1.
Under the amnesty scheme, foreigners residing in the country in violation of the provisions of Law No 4 of 2009 Regulating the Entry, Exit, Residence and Sponsorship of Expatriates can exit the country without legal consequences.
Now, the ministry has invited comments and opinions from the public on the issue. A related poll on the MoI website asks people if they think the amnesty period will help reduce absconding cases and related violations.
In a statement, the MoI stressed that abiding by laws was key to spreading safety and security in the country. Violations lead to social and security-related problems, which may result in crimes that have a negative impact on society. This also applies to Law No 4 of 2009.
