The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has announced its initiative for the upcoming Eid al-Adha to provide Qataris with subsidised Jordanian sheep.
The sale of subsidised sheep, which begins on September 4, will go on until the third day of Eid. MEC has set the price of live sheep at QR1,100 per head. Every Qatari, 18 years or older, is entitled to one subsidised sheep. At the time of the purchase, the buyer should show his Qatari ID.
MEC has made a contract with Widam Food Company to provide the required number of subsidised Jordanian sheep, which would be sold directly to Qataris at the slaughterhouse at the Central Market at Abu Hamour Area, Doha, and Widam slaughterhouses at Al Khor, Al Shammal and Al Mazrouah.
MEC has also asked Widam to make sure that all the sheep on sale would be healthy and of adequate weight and quality to comply with the requirements of the ritual animal sacrifice for Eid. Accordingly, MEC affirmed that it would intensify inspection campaigns in this particular area to closely monitor the compliance of the providers and enhance consumer protection.
This is the fourth consecutive year for such an initiative to be launched by MEC aiming at controlling prices in the local market and avoiding any unjustifiable and sudden hike in prices due to the seasonal surge in demand.
