VLCC has expressed its continued commitment towards helping reduce the incidence of obesity in Qatar.
The company has been “widely commended” for its anti-obesity awareness campaign, which was launched in India in 2000 and implemented in Qatar in 2006, it has said in a statement.
VLCC’s anti-obesity drive has now evolved into an annual event, continuously aiming to raise awareness about obesity and educate the public on developing daily healthy habits of nutrition and physical activity.
VLCC specialises in scientific weight management solutions, skin and haircare treatments, beauty services and personal care.
According to a study published in medical journal The Lancet by an international consortium of researchers led by the University of Washington’s Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, Qatar ranked fifth globally in terms of its prevalence of overweight and obese adults.
The study found 55% of Qatar’s female population to be obese with a body mass index of 30 and above. It also found that 44% of men were obese.
The journal identified long-term exposure to an unhealthy lifestyle as one of the main reasons for surging obesity rates in the country.
Kiram Tbayli, regional technical head of slimming operations at VLCC, said: “The high prevalence of obesity and diabetes is attributed primarily to unhealthy lifestyle practices. For this reason, VLCC concentrates on raising food awareness and encourages individuals to exercise more to build a healthy society and reduce the prevalence of chronic and non-chronic diseases.”
In this regard, VLCC has pledged to offer advanced treatments to help Qatar combat obesity.
