The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has reminded motorists to keep adequate distance between vehicles in order to avoid accidents.
A distance of around 5-10m needs to be maintained between two vehicles, and drivers should increase the gap if travelling at a high speed, the ministry has stressed in a Facebook post.
The tips on safe distance come as part of the MoI’s efforts to raise awareness among people in Qatar on various traffic-related issues.
The advisory states that a motorist should maintain enough distance from the vehicle in front as this constitutes a key element of safe driving practices. This can help prevent accidents – in case the vehicle in front suddenly stops or slows down – as the driver of the car behind it will have adequate time and space to slow down or stop.
Maintain a safe distance from the car in front becomes even more important during challenging weather conditions such as fog and dust storms, which lead to a drop in visibility. Motorists should be extra careful in such situations.
In a related advisory on its website, the MoI said statistics indicated that traffic accidents often took place due to the lack of sufficient space between vehicles, with the drivers involved going at a high speed and being unable to avoid a collision when the vehicle in front suddenly stopped or slowed down.
The advisory reiterated that the driver of the car that hits another vehicle from behind would be considered the offender as s/he did not maintain adequate distance and was therefore unable to stop on time.

Traffic congestion
due to accident

In an update on its Twitter page yesterday morning, the Ministry of Interior said traffic congestion was reported from the Al Gharafa bridge (Immigration) on February 22 Road due to an accident. Noting that patrols were present at the site, it added: “February 22 Road users are requested to take alternative routes to avoid traffic disruptions and reach their destinations.”
