The former president of Singapore, S R Nathan, is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a stroke on Sunday morning, a statement from the Prime Minister's Office said.

The statement said that Nathan was currently in the intensive care unit of the Singapore General Hospital.

S R Nathan, 92, was the sixth president of Singapore serving two terms from 1999 to 2011. To date, Nathan is the longest-serving president of the country.

He had already suffered a stroke in April last year, but was said to be recovering.

"Mary and I are sad to hear about former President Nathan's hospitalisation this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family," Nathan's successor President Tony Tan said.
