The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has issued safety tips to be followed in the kitchen, particularly during Ramadan and the Eid holidays when people are known to spend considerable time there preparing different types of food.
“If we exercise a little caution, we can ensure our safety and that of our family members, especially children,” the MoI said in a post on its Facebook page, wishing everyone safe Ramadan and Eid days.
The tips offered by the ministry include ensuring the safety of electrical connections and cords, which should not be left it in a manner that may pose a risk.
“Wipe spills as soon as they happen. Wet spots can be slippery,” the advisory said. “When working with pots on the stove, be sure to hold the handle while stirring to prevent the pot from slipping off the burner.”
Children should be kept away from knives and those who use them should pick them by their handle. Also, kids should be kept away from burners and electric sources.
Keep electrical cords away from the stove top, oven and sink. “Before leaving the kitchen, check that the oven and burners are all turned off,” the advisory said. “Don’t put knives or other sharp objects in a sink full of water. Someone could reach them and get hurt.”
The advisory also stressed that people should never pour water on a fire that breaks out during cooking as this could make the fire bigger. Instead, they should use fire blankets and extinguishers.
“Never add water to a pan with hot oil in it. It could splatter and burn someone,” the advisory added. “Keep paper towels, dish towels and pot holders away from the stove top so they don’t catch fire.”
