The Indian embassy held a public event yesterday to celebrate the second International Day of Yoga at Al Gharafa Sports Club Indoor Hall. The event was organised with the support and co-operation of the government of Qatar, Indian Cultural Centre and other community organisations. Indian ambassador Sanijv Arora, several Qatari dignitaries and a large number of yoga enthusiasts took part in the event which included a short film on yoga and a demonstration by yoga experts. The First International Day of Yoga was celebrated on June 21, 2015 and a special event was held in Qatar on the occasion. Qatar Post had issued commemorative stamps to mark the occasion. Government of India in 2014 had called on the UN Member States to work towards adopting an International Day of Yoga. India’s resolution at the United Nations General Assembly to declare June 21 as the International Day of Yoga was unanimously adopted on December 11, 2014, with a record co-sponsorship of 177 countries, including Qatar.
