Road fatalities decline
The rate of road fatalities in Qatar has fallen by 22.2% in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the same period last year, a recent study by Qatar Centre for Transport and Traffic Safety at Qatar University has shown.
Dr Khalifa al-Khalifa, director of the centre and dean of QU Faculty of Engineering, said that the population growth in Qatar amounting to 7% during 2010- 2015 and the increasing number of vehicles, which exceeded a million cars, represent a major challenge for the Traffic Department and the other entities concerned.
The analytical study of the centre revealed that the road behaviour of motorists is influenced by fasting during the holy month of Ramadan and the change in the nutrition intake. It recommended that motorists should take more care and avoid getting nervous or take hurried decisions while on the road, as this may lead to accidents and traffic violations.
The study revealed that on Fridays during Ramadan, accidents were less by 40.2% on average compared to other weekdays. The study also recommended pedestrians to exercise extra care when crossing roads to avoid
accidents and injuries.
