The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has reminded people not to fall prey to the tactics of those involved in the illegal practice of begging during Ramadan and report such cases to the authorities.
The ministry said in a post on its Facebook page on Tuesday that “begging is a social evil” whose incidence goes up in the holy month of Ramadan. Some people could be seen standing in front of mosques and shopping malls, and on densely populated roads, with the aim of exploiting the spirit of charity that prevails during Ramadan, it noted.
These people resort to begging as they see it as an easy way to make some money, the MoI observed. It urged citizens and residents not to fall prey to the tactics employed by such people to gain sympathy, such as showing “affected body parts”, and other methods of deception.
The MoI also stressed that while those begging try to make money through illegal ways, authorised charity organisations in the country provide financial and material aid to needy people while preserving their dignity.
“We appeal to all citizens and residents to give their donations to authorised charity organisations, which will distribute (the same) to deserving and needy people and join us in the fight against this undesirable social habit,” the ministry added.
People can report cases of begging by calling 2347444/33618627.
The Criminal Investigation Department at the MoI recently revealed plans to deploy police patrolling teams across Qatar in a bid to crack down on beggars during Ramadan.
