Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson and former PM Khaleda Zia yesterday invited her arch rival Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to her Iftar (fast-breaking) party scheduled for June 11.
The BNP chairperson will host the Iftar party in honour of political leaders at the city’s Bashundhara International Convention Centre in Dhaka.
A four-member BNP delegation, led by its organising secretary Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu, went to Awami League office at noon with an invitation card of the Iftar party on behalf of Zia.
Awami League deputy office secretary Mrinal Kanti Das received the invitation card on behalf of Sheikh Hasina, now in Saudi Arabia.
The other members of the delegation are BNP organising secretary Imran Saleh Prince, assistant organising secretary Akhan Kuddus Rahman and assistant office secretary Asadul Kaim Shaheen. Dulu said said they have also invited 12 others ruling party leaders, including its general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, to attend Iftar.
The BNP leader also said Zia is going to host four Iftar parties - for orphans and Alem Ulema on the first day of Ramadan, for politicians on June 11, for professionals June 12 and for diplomats on June 13- during this fasting month.
The chiefs of the country’s two major political parties greet each other during Eids and Bengali New Year and invite each other to their Iftar parties every year though they have long been avoiding each other to personally meet or exchange pleasantries.
