Today, June 6, is the first day of the holy month of Ramadan in Qatar and other Gulf and Arab states.
The Crescent Sighting Committee at Qatar’s Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs announced the beginning of Ramadan following a meeting of the committee yesterday evening after the sighting of the crescent moon.
Meanwhile, religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Yemen made similar announcements.
Other Muslim countries in the Middle East and North Africa are also expected to begin observing Ramadan today or tomorrow.
The holy month of Ramadan is coinciding this year with the summer solstice or the longest day of the year with 14 hours and two minutes of daytime, Kuwaiti Civil Aviation meteorologist Essa Ramadan said yesterday.
