Information Communication Technology experts from Qatar and across the globe delivered 50 workshops to 500 local teachers at the event. The workshops focused on developing practical and hands-on experience in ICT in education.
ICT plays an integral role in the education sector by enhancing learning for students, promoting an innovative, diversified economy and ultimately supporting the national development plan by promoting human and social development for Qatar’s future generations.
Mohamed Janahi, a mechanical engineer at MOQ and an educator in Teach For Qatar, was one of the presenters at the conference, delivering several workshops on his innovative approach to teaching mathematics to a packed classroom of teachers from Qatari schools.
“Teaching teenagers mathematics is not an easy task, therefore I developed alternate teaching methods to make the subject entertaining and to help motivate my students to strive to be better,” Mohamed said.
Examples included teaching mathematics using short films, poetry or holding in-class competitions on a weekly basis. He also promotes his approach on YouTube, through which he has helped teach others the curriculum online. Since his assignment, there has been a noticeable improvement in the overall performance of students at his school.
Mohamed has built a successful career as a mechanical engineer in MOQ. In 2014 he received an offer to support his country and teach the next generation through Teach for Qatar. Mohamed was the first teacher to be enlisted in the programme and part of the first batch of teachers to be assigned roles in independent schools in Qatar.
Teach For Qatar is a local non-governmental organisation that aims to improve Qatar’s education system and build a strong knowledge-based economy. The programme focuses on recruiting highly-skilled and talented individuals, assigning them to teach at various schools in Qatar with the intention of inspiring students during a two-year teaching placement in independent schools.
“I’ve always wanted to teach. Over the years I had been conducting presentations for employees that ranged from teaching them the Arabic language to an introduction to Oil and Gas”, Mohamed said.

Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) and the College of the North Atlantic Qatar (CNA-Q) recently held the 7th annual ‘Exploring ICT in Education Conference’ at the CNAQ campus, Doha, helping to enhance science, technology, engineering and mathematics teaching in schools.
