The Hamad Medical Corporation highlighted the state-of-the-art technologies and techniques in pregnancy-related ultrasound scans during their second Qatar National Obstetric Ultrasound Training Course by the Foeto-Maternal Medicine Unit (FMU), Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at the Women’s Hospital (WH).
Ultrasounds, which are also commonly called a sonogram, work by using sound waves at higher frequencies than the human ear can hear for the purpose of stimulating the tissues in the body.
This stimulation gives the ability to view and monitor images such as the flow of blood and the movement of the body’s internal organs.
Course chairperson and senior consultant, FMU, Dr Najat Khenyab said: “Ultrasounds are one of the most useful tools in caring for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the post-delivery recovery period. The procedure allows us to properly assess early stages of pregnancy, fetal growth and fetal well-being.”
She added: “Ultrasounds provide our doctors with diagnostic abilities which can greatly benefit our obstetric patients.”
More than 300 healthcare professionals attended the training course including local obstetricians, radiologists, family physicians, sonographers, and other allied health professionals from HMC, Sidra Medical and Research Centre, Primary Health Care Corporation, and other Qatar-based private healthcare facilities.
The course was led by several local, regional and international experts in obstetrics including Dr Abdulmohsen al-Anjari, consultant, Maternal-Foetal Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Maternity Hospital in Kuwait and Dr Ali H al-Ibrahim, consultant, Maternal-Foetal Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oasis Hospital, in the United Arab Emirates.
During the course, various fundamental and advanced topics in foetal care were highlighted in a series of lectures, coupled with ultrasound live demonstrations which aim to enhance ultrasound skills in diagnosis of various foetal conditions.
Course co-chairperson and co-ordinator, consultant, Maternal-Foetal Medicine, Dr Sawsan al-Obaidly said: “This course builds on the success of last year’s learning objectives. Our aim is to ensure all of our healthcare professionals in Qatar are well equipped to identification early detection of fetal abnormalities through the effective use of ultrasound technology.”
“Optimising advanced imaging techniques will give us the opportunity, if needed, to refer expecting mothers to a Foetal Maternal Medicine Unit.
Here specialists can provide patients with a proper diagnosis through non-invasive and invasive testing and counsel parents regarding the expected outcomes and developmental status of their unborn child,” Dr al-Obaidly said.
