Nepal’s first professional wrestler, Himalayan Tiger was in Doha recently to seek opportunities for wrestling matches in Qatar.
A large number of Nepalese — entrepreneurs, community leaders, social workers, intellectuals and journalists — gathered at the Mazza Restaurant in Doha on a recent weekend to meet with the Himalayan Tiger. They asked him questions about his life and the game.
Tiger said, “If the Nepalese community provides assistance, we can schedule interesting fixtures with players from Japan, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Europe and America.”
Nepal, he said, has many gifted people who can do well in wrestling. However, the “lack of technical facilities and the absence of appropriate practice rings in Nepal have spoiled the wrestling scene in the country.”
Tiger said he has repeatedly raised the issue with the government, but the players there have received little to no support. He also talked about his organisation, the Nepal Wrestling Association, and its membership criteria.
Tiger said that in his meeting with Ali Marafi, the president of Qatar Pro Wrestling Association (QPWA), Marafi has already promised support for any future wrestling event.
Community leader TB Karki said it won’t be difficult to organise a game if Nepalese community comes together to support the event. Community leaders Binesh Tamang, Ishwor Kafle, Bimal Subedi and Ganesh Shiba said they are more than eager to help with such an initiative.
Tiger — who has been to 44 countries so far and has lived 11 years in the USA — is also a Goodwill Ambassador of the Nepal Tourism Board. In his meeting, he also urged the Nepalese in Qatar to contribute to the reconstruction of the historic Dharahara, which collapsed in last year’s earthquake. He also said that Nepal is still a safe destination for tourists and has the infrastructure intact to support tourism.
Nepalese Tiger, or Bharat Bahadur Bisural, joined the Royal Nepalese Army after completing high school. He served in the army for 11 years, where he acquired skills that would eventually see him in action in the ring.
