Camels 1 have stayed undefeated in the inaugural Qatar Rugby Sevens competition after eight weeks of exhilirating action at the Aspire Warm Up Track. The question now is whether they will be able to continue their 14-match winning momentum when it matters the most.
The finals series of the Qatar Rugby Sevens will kick off today at the Aspire Warm Up Track. The finals will show case seven teams in six matches; each match lasting 14 minutes – seven minutes each half.
Camels 1 have an automatic entry into the finals, while four teams — DRFC Hurricanes, Camels 2, Lions and Al Khor — will slug it out for a shot at the title against the top team.
While second-placed Hurricanes will face fifth-placed Al Khor in the first match, Camels 2 and Lions will take on each other in the second.
The two losing teams from these matches will play the Plate Finals, while the winners will play a semi-final to decide on Camels 1’s finals opponent.
College of North Atlantic - Qatar (CNA-Q) and Blue Falcons, placed sixth and seventh in the standings respectively, will face each other for the Bowls Finals.
The first match of the inaugural edition of the league kicked off on February 6 as part of a move to widen the appeal of what is becoming one of the world’s most popular sports. With its induction into the Rio Olympics later this year, rugby was rated the third most watched sport worldwide just behind FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics.
Today’s finals fever will attract VIPs and dignitaries including Minister of Energy & Industry HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada, Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) president Hilal al-Kuwari, Katara general manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice chairman Mohamed bin Tawar al-Kuwari, Woqod CEO Ibrahim al-Kuwari and AZF Events manager Abdullah al-Khater.
The event will also be attended by sponsors, spectators, families and friends. The evening will provide entertainment and side attractions including gifts and giveaways. There is also a competition for the best finals picture by any would be photographer. Gates open at 3pm and entry is free to all.
