Jockey Gaetan Faucon rides Adwan to victory in the Musheireb Cup at the QREC yesterday.

Umm Qarn’s Adwan raced to his first win over a mile and a quarter when Alban de Mieulle’s charge was guided to victory by Gaetan Faucon in the Musheireb Cup, yesterday’s feature race at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club.
The handicap race, for horses rated 70-90, saw Ibrahim al-Malki’s Crafted take the lead under Andrew Elliot, while Faucon tracked the leader on the inside.
On to the home straight, Faucon had Adwan squeeze past Crafted on the inside, into the lead and held on well for a victory.
Al Zekreet Racing’s Sudest edged out Crafted for the second spot.
After credible performances this year, including a win in the Muraikh Cup over a mile in December and a third place in HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa al Thani Cup in January, Injaaz Stud’s Al Safi gave Mohamed Jassim Ghazali his second win of the day.
The Dahess colt did well under JP Guillambert to bounce back from a ninth place finish in the Qatar International Cup (Gr1 PA) over the HH The Emir’s Sword weekend, and edge out HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalifa al-Thani’s Amer colt Aaley Al Magam.
Another Injaaz Stud entry, Vetlana De Faust, trained by the older Ghazali, Jassim, was third.
Adrie de Vries guided Hussain Ali Bukanan’s Abrar to his third victory this season and first since the Oaks Trial in the Local Thoroughbred Handicap event for horses rated 70 and below.
Abrar finished a length ahead of Mohamed Hussain-trained Al Mayeda, while Daleem, ridden by Cedric Segeon, was third.
Makinson Lane and Stevie’s Wonder won the two runs of the Class 5 Thoroughbred Handicap event for horses rated 55-75 respectively.
In the first run, Ahmed Hassan al-Malki al-Jehani’s Makinson Lane managed to edge out Nasser Hadi Nasser al-Ramzani’s Half Turn in what turned out to be a two-horse race in the end. Stefano Ibido-trained Dubai Crown finished three lengths behind in third.
Stevie’s Wonder, in contrast to Makinson Lane’s win, was raced to a comfortable four-length victory by Harry Bentley for trainer Mohamed Jassim Ghazali.
Sheikh Faisal bin Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani’s Fadak continued her run of places in Handicap events when she finished second behind Stevie’s Wonder. Fadak has now finished second twice in a row after finishing third for two straight runs.
Ibrahim al-Malki-trained Could Be was third.
White Vin Jan raced to her first victory in six outings this season, when the Hamad al-Marri-trained filly was ridden to a narrow half-a-length win by jockey Marvin Suerland in the Class 5 Thoroughbred Plate event.
Jassim Ghazali’s charge Jubilante finished second, under Bentley, while Ibrahim al-Malki’s Buy Art rounded up the top three.
In the two maiden plate races earlier in the day, Mohamed Hussain-trained Al Sarim was guided to his first victory by Marco Monteriso in six outings in the Class 6 Thoroughbred Maiden Plate event, while the Local Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate was won by Hagwa, running for trainer Julian Smart.
Hagwa, ridden by Bentley in the colours of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalifa al-Thani, finished a comfortable four lengths ahead of Daryan Al Naif and Istifzaz, for his first win in a five-race career so far.
Al Sarim finished two lengths ahead of Raj To Riches and Cameraman for his first win.
