In support of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani’s initiative to promote sports and health at work, Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) in association with Action on Diabetes (AoD) hosted a walkathon for employees and their families to mark this year’s National Sport Day.
Under the theme “Small Steps, Big Difference.” MOQ employees walked along the Doha Corniche with a goal to take 10,000 steps (about 5km) for each participant and record more than 1mn steps all together.
Employees working on MOQ’s nine offshore platform locations also joined the Sport Day activities.
“I would like to recognise the bold vision of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for initiating National Sport Day as an important reminder to include physical activity in our daily healthcare regimen and that something as simple as a daily walk can bring a lasting benefit to our health,” MOQ managing director Lewis Affleck said in a statement.
“Our AoD partnership is supporting the Qatar National Vision 2030 and to help promote good health and reduce the prevalence of diabetes in Qatar,” he noted.
“Today we are collectively and symbolically taking small steps in the right direction for a healthier nation. Diabetes is a real issue in Qatar and we urge everyone to make their own journey towards a healthier lifestyle” Affleck added.
AoD seeks to address the growing problem of diabetes in Qatar with an extensive and wide-ranging programme. It is designed to give backing to local authorities in raising awareness on diabetes, helping those at risk to avoid it, and supporting people living with the condition.
