Two Nigerian expatriates have been sentenced to 10 years in jail by a Doha criminal court for trading in illicit drugs.

Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported Tuesday that the court also fined each of them QR200,000. Besides, the court ordered their deportation upon completion of the jail sentence.

The issue was brought to the attention of the authorities when an undercover policeman agreed with one of the defendants to buy some marijuana worth QR40,000 from him. All the movement of the policeman and the defendant were monitored closely by the security agencies.

Accordingly, one of the defendants met the undercover policeman at the Doha Industrial Area. There they agreed on the sum and the delivery method. After that the defendant told the undercover policeman that they needed to go to Najma to get the drugs from his partner. When they reached Najma, the second defendant met them and gave the undercover policeman 97 grams of marijuana worth around QR6,500.

While the transaction was being carried out, police arrested the two culprits while in possession of the illicit drugs.

In addition, based on laboratory tests, both the accused were proved to have consumed illicit drugs. The defendants confessed to their guilt during investigations.
