The Doha event was the first professional women’s tennis tournament staged in the Middle East and today it is a WTA Premier 5 event – bringing the greatest names in the sport with total prize money of USD $2,517,250.
The field led by world No. 1 Serena Williams includes 2014 champion Simona Halep, Maria Sharapova, Garbine Muguruza, Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber and the defending champion Lucie Safarova.
Tournament director Saad al-Mohannadi said: “It’s honourable to have very high calibre tennis stars coming for the Qatar Total Open. It is an extraordinary field and I think it will ensure high intensity matches. It will be exciting to see if Serena can make another memorable moment here in Doha and to watch Safarova if she can defend her title among such a talented group of athletes including Simona Halep, Maria Shrapova, Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova.”
