Lebanese protesters and security forces scuffled yesterday in the capital Beirut in connection with a months-long crisis over rubbish disposal.
The violence started when some of the demonstrators tried to storm the building of the Environment Ministry in central Beirut protesting what they said was the authorities’ failure to end the problem that started in July.
The protesters from the group We Want Accountability called for “explanation and transparency” about a government plan to export Lebanon’s waste.
Police arrested 10 protesters. No injuries were reported.
The crisis started in Beirut and its suburbs in July when Lebanon’s largest landfill in Naameh, in southern Lebanon, was shut down after the government failed to renew the contract of the company in charge of the facility.
