HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani and HE the Foreign Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah attending a regional conference on the role of  the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) in the Arab world  at Doha’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel yesterday. The Prime Minister opened the two-day conference, organised by the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in co-operation with the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI).  Speaking at the opening of the conference, NHRC chairman Dr Ali bin Samikh al-Marri pointed to the “serious threats” the Arab region is facing, which have heavily affected the human rights situation and the performance of civil society and human rights organisations. This, he said, had led to a significant decline in respect of human rights “in an unprecedented way and a manner that can’t be ignored or overlooked”.
