LeBron James worked overtime to keep the Cleveland Cavaliers’ winning streak alive.
James scored 27 points, including the go-ahead layup in the extra session and assisted on Kyrie Irving’s game-sealing triple with 13 seconds remaining Tuesday, rallying the Cavaliers past the Dallas Mavericks 110-107 for their eighth straight win.
“We just never lost our composure,” said James, whose club trailed most of the game. “We all got frustrated at times but we never lost the task at hand and that was just trying to get a win. And we were able to accomplish that.”
Kevin Love finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Matthew Dellavedova netted 12 for the Cavs (27-9), who moved to 3-0 on their six-game road trip.
“We didn’t start well and it didn’t go away fast but our guys displayed a winning attitude,” Cavs coach David Blatt said. “We just stayed in and we didn’t lose our way.”
The Cavaliers wiped out an early 16-point deficit before a ferocious two-handed dunk by James with 20.9 seconds left tied the contest at 95-95.
The Mavs turned to German Dirk Nowitzki on the final play in regulation but Iman Shumpert stripped him of the ball while shooting to force overtime.
“It’s not an uncommon situation for Dirk to get the ball in the middle of the foul line because of his great sense and feel to be able to maneuver himself for a good look,” Blatt said. “Iman made a great play on the ball to knock it away from him and save us there.”
In overtime, Nowitzki knocked down a pair of early triples and a layup from Chandler Parsons helped the Mavs to a 105-104 advantage.
But the Cavs weren’t done as James’ waltzed in for the go-ahead layup with a minute left. After a missed three-pointer by Deron Williams, James, who added 10 rebounds and seven assists, found a wide-open Irving for the dagger triple to make it 109-105.
“It’s just the confidence I have in him and the confidence I know he has in himself,” James said.
