PA Parenteau scored twice, Jonathan Bernier stopped 39 shots for his second shutout of the season and the Toronto Maple Leafs had no problem handling the Anaheim Ducks, 4-0, on Wednesday night.
Nazem Kadri also had a second-period goal for the Leafs, who pushed their road record to 9-9-2 to start their three-game trip through California. Toronto, which also got two assists from Tyler Bozak, plays the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center last night.
The Ducks (16-16-7) had won four of five coming out of the Christmas break but lost in regulation for the first time since Dec. 21 and failed to move back into playoff position in the Pacific Division.
And it wasn’t their only loss of the evening. John Gibson, who became an All-Star goalie for the first time Wednesday, was forced to leave the game in the third with an apparent lower-body injury.
Bernier was sharp right from the opening period. His 18 saves not only kept the Ducks off the scoreboard but allowed Toronto to take a lead into the first intermission.
Parenteau provided that when he jumped on a loose puck created by teammate Matt Hunwick having his shot blocked. The winger snapped a shot past Gibson and didn’t stop there.
In the second period, Parenteau went to the net to deposit a rebound left by Gibson on James van Riemsdyk’s initial chance. Parenteau, the Ducks’ ninth-round pick the 2001 draft, had his second multi-goal game of the season.
Kadri gave the Leafs a three-goal lead when he took a pass from Leo Komarov and beat Gibson clean from the left circle on a corresponding rush after Ducks forwards Shawn Horcoff and Jakob Silfverberg failed to connect on a two-on-one rush up ice.
Bernier has had much better results since a demotion to the American Hockey League that came after a horrid 0-8-1 start to his season. He’s gone 6-2-2 since his call up from the Toronto Marlies.
The Ducks were shut out for the eighth time and they lost Gibson in the first minute of the third after Kadri collided with him as he charged toward the net. Gibson, who had stopped 22 of 25 shots, was attended to by Ducks trainer Joe Huff and eventually had to come out.
Frederik Andersen replaced him and Leafs forward Brad Boyes managed to deflect a puck past him at 2:47 of the third.
