An Indian expatriate, stranded in Qatar for the last several months, could travel home yesterday, thanks to the intervention of some members of the community.
The expatriate, who operated a couple of businesses, had incurred huge debts resulting from the continuous losses in his activities after becoming indisposed in a road traffic accident.
Compounding the tragic situation, his wife ended her life along with their seven-year-old daughter by jumping into a lake in Kerala’s Thiruvananathapuram in November last year.
The couple also has two other minor sons, who are in the care of the wife’s mother.
The suicide was triggered when one of her relatives duped her off the money she received for selling one of her husband’s properties to repay his loans.
The relative was arrested by the police later.
Once reports about the circumstances that led his wife to take the extreme step appeared in Malayalam newspapers, some of the community members in Doha came forward to help their compatriot.
The fact that the stranded expatriate’s two sons were desperate to see their father prompted the community members to stand guarantee for him, on the basis of which the sponsor granted him exit permit.
At the time of his accident, the individual had more than 150 expatriates working with him and most of them are still working under the same sponsor, it is learnt.
